UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has canceled his visit to India on Republic day. PM Jonhson, who was scheduled to be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day parade on January 26, called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express his regret.
Boris Johnson called PM Modi and regretted that he would have to cancel his visit to India because of the serious coronavirus related situation in the UK, sources told.
The decision comes at a time when the UK is grappling with a fresh outbreak of the Covid-19. The UK recently imposed a nationwide lockdown till mid-February to control the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the country, especially after the emergence of the mutated strain.
For the past seven days in a row, the UK has reported over 50,000 new Covid-19 cases daily. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2,713,563.
On Monday night, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed a new stay-at-home lockdown until at least mid-February to battle through the “critical moment” in the coronavirus pandemic with UK grappling with a major surge in Covid-19 cases due to the new virus strain.
Addressing the country in a televised address from Downing Street on Monday night, Johnson said the UK is at a pivotal stage in its fight against the rapidly spreading infections as he confirmed a complete shutdown of schools and businesses, similar to the very first nationwide lockdown back in March 2020.
