Congress leader files PIL in Gujarat HC for postponement on by-polls of 8 constituencies

Congress leader Farsu Goklani filed the PIL, seeking postponement of by-election to eight assembly constituencies in the state in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic was filed in Gujarat High Court, hearing of which is scheduled next week.

By-polls to eight seats have been necessitated after eight Congress MLAs had resigned. The polls in the five assembly seats of Abdasa, Limbdi, Gadhada, Dang and Dhari have to be conducted before September 14 as the MLAs had resigned in March, while by-polls to three seats of Morbi, Kaprada and Karjan will be conducted in December as the MLAs had resigned in June before the Rajya Sabha polls. As per the rule, the polls should be held within six months from the day a seat falls vacant.

“I have filed a petition in the HC in the interest of the public as the situation is grave in the state on account of coronavirus and health of the people is paramount rather than holding by-election,” Goklani told.

Goklani is a member of Patan district panchayat. “I filed the plea and its hearing is likely to come up next week.”
