Gujarat High Court has rejected the petition of Congress leaders challenging the Rajya Sabha election of Foreign Minister S Jaishankar Prasad and Rajya Sabha member Jugal Ji Thakor. Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani along with both Congress candidates for Rajya Sabha also challenged the Election Commission’s decision to hold separate elections for the two seats. Gujarat High Court judge Bela Trivedi on Tuesday rejected the election of Jaishankar and Jugalji, rejecting the plea of Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani, against Congress candidate Gaurav Pandya and BJP’s Jugalji Thakor against BJP’s S Jaishankar Prasad of Rajya Sabha. Is considered valid.
The Congress alleged that the Election Commission conducted separate elections for the two seats of the Rajya Sabha in the July 2019 elections, which led to the victory of their candidates in both seats as the ruling party had a majority. In November 2019, Foreign Ministers Jaishankar and Jugalji Thakor had submitted an affidavit demanding the dismissal of the petitions of the Congress candidates. He said that the Election Commission has conducted the elections only following the policy rules of the Commission. The model code of conduct was not violated anywhere in this election. The High Court rejected the pleas of the Congress leaders, considering their and the Election Commission’s arguments as valid.
