Brazil’s President Zaire Bolsonaro indicated a more pragmatic stance towards the largest trade partner of the Latin American country, saying that China is fast becoming a part of Brazil’s future. Bolsonaro, standing in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia with Chinese President Xi Chinfing, said he hoped that the two countries would not only enhance their trade relations but also bring “diversity” to them.
China is becoming more part of Brazil’s future. The two leaders signed agreements on transport services and investment in the wake of the BRICS summit. Xi also hoped that both countries would strengthen multilateralism and create a free world economy. Their meeting was one of several meetings held outside the BRICS summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are participating in the two-day summit.
Bolsonaro is under considerable pressure from Brazil’s powerful beef, agriculture and mining sectors to maintain good relations with China. He is a big fan of US President Donald Trump. He threatened to completely end relations with China during last year’s election campaign, accusing China of “buying Brazil” and his pro-business government has been trying to make up for the loss ever since. The BRICS conference is the first major international event for Bolsonaro since he took office in January.
