Saradha chit fund case : Ex-IPS Rajeev Kumar gets anticipatory bail by Calcutta HC

The Calcutta High Court has today approved the anticipatory bail of former Kolkata Police Commissioner and State CID ADG Rajeev Kumar in the Saradha chit fund scam worth thousands of crores. Rajeev Kumar is relieved by this. The judge said that after scrutinizing all the facts presented by the CBI, it does not appear that Rajeev Kumar needs to be detained and questioned. However, at the same time, the High Court judge has said that whenever the CBI calls for questioning, he will have to appear. Provided that the CBI will have to give notice for this 48 hours in advance. Rajeev Kumar has received anticipatory bail on a bond of Rs 50000. The CBI is now preparing to go to the Supreme Court in this case. Rajeev Kumar is currently the Additional Director General of West Bengal CID. He was involved in a special investigation team set up by the state government to investigate the scam. In 2014, the Supreme Court handed over the investigation to the CBI, along with other cases of chit fund. The CBI has been trying to take him into custody since 13th September, when the Calcutta High Court lifted the security provided to him from his arrest. The CBI has accused Kumar of destroying evidence in the case in which several other leaders, including the ruling Trinamool Congress leaders in Bengal, have either been arrested or questioned. In February, when CBI officials arrived at his official residence to meet him for questioning, the policemen had cordoned off to protect him and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself sat on a dharna, calling it an ‘attack on federalism.’
