The Bharat Ratna is highest civilian honoured has begun. President Ram Nath Kovind is conferring the Bharat Ratna to three civilians of country’s highest civilian honoured today. Former President of the country Pranab Mukherjee and singers Bhupen Hazarika and Nanaji Deshmukh have been honoured with Bharat Ratna award.
Bhupen Hazarika’s son Tej Hazarika received the honoured in his place. Apart from these two, the politician Nanaji Deshmukh was also honored with this honor. After receiving the Bharat Ratna, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu congratulated Pranab Mukherjee.
This award is given for making notable contributions in the fields of arts, literature, science, sports, public service in the country. The award was instituted in January 1954 by the then President Rajendra Prasad. The first Bharat Ratna was given to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
