The Delhi cabinet gave its nod to AAP government’s ambitious scheme of providing free WiFi in the national capital.
Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said free WiFi was one of the 70 promises his party had made ahead of the 2015 elections.
“It was our commitment to give free WiFi to Delhi and today we have fulfilled that,” Kejriwal said, adding that tenders will soon be floated and the work would begin in 3-4 months.
Kejriwal said 11,000 hotspots would be installed across the city and users within 50m radius would be able to access it. Each user would get 15GB free data in a month at a speed of 200mbps.
While 4000 hotspots would be installed at bus queue shelters, each assembly constituency will have 100 each at community places such as parks and dispensaries.
The project is likely to cost around Rs 99 crore per year.
