Former wartime defence chief Gotabaya Rajapaksa wins presidential election of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa has won the presidential elections. He has got 53-54 percent votes. Sajith Premadasa of the New Democratic Front (NDF) is in second place. Voting for the presidential election was held in Sri Lanka on Saturday. Sri Lanka has a total of 25 districts, which are in nine provinces. Around 80 per cent of the nearly 16 million eligible voters exercised their franchise on Saturday to elect Sri Lanka’s eighth president.
The Tamil-majority northern province recorded a turnout of around 70 percent. Jaffna district recorded 66 percent. In the districts of Kilinochchi, which had suffered the war in the past, 73 percent polling was recorded, 76 percent in Mullaitivu, 75 percent in Vavuniya and 71 percent in Mannar. This percentage is slightly lower than the 2015 presidential election, when the average voting percentage was 81.52 percent.
