‘Modi’ surname jibe case : Rahul Gandhi granted bail by a court in Patna

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi granted bail by a court in Patna.
Rahul Gandhi appeared before the court in connection with a defamation case filed against him by senior Bihar BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi over Rahul Gandhi’s “Modi” surname jibe made during the recent Lok Sabha election campaign in Kolar, Karnataka, on 13th April. He had allegedly said, “Be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi, all has a common surname…why all thieves have a common surname?”.
PM Modi found Rahul Gandhi’s statement “offensive and derogatory” and filed the case under section 500 of the Indian Penal Code in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of the Patna civil court on 18th April. Later, the case was referred by CJM Shashikant Roy to the court of ACJM Kumar Gunjan.
Advocate Birendra Sharma and Anshul Kumar had filed a bail application on behalf of Rahul Gandhi.
While coming out of the court, Rahul Gandhi told journalists that those who contested the RSS and the BJP would have to face such cases. “My fight is against the ideologies of the RSS and the BJP and my fight would continue”, he said.
Rahul Gandhi further said that he would also “continue his fight to protect Constitution and the rights of farmers and poor people”.
Congress leaders and workers lined up outside the court campus with placards saying “Rahul Gandhi, take back your resignation”.
