After much delay due to a legal tangle, the TN government is gearing up to hold the elections, which was last held in 2011, and published a gazette after delimitation of wards.
Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has kickstarted its process of selecting candidates for the local body elections in Tamilnadu. Keen on having representatives in every nook and corner of the state, the 14-month-old party is giving a thrust to the local body elections, according to senior party functionaries.
MNM lacks a strong base in rural pockets. The party’s candidate fared better in urban and semi-urban areas in the recently-held polls. Hence, the party is giving importance to the local body elections to have its representation in each and every panchayat and corporation. “We are looking at these elections as an opportunity to build a strong grassroot level structure in the rural pockets,” said another party functionary.
