Congress has advised its Gujarat MLAs for not meeting Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani and his deputy Nitin Patel until the Rajya Sabha elections are over. These directions have been issued to thwart speculation about Congress MLAs deserting the party ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. Two seats in the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat have been vacated, by Amit Shah and Smriti Irani, and elections for these will be held in three months. Although the BJP does not have enough MLAs to win both seats, party president Jitu Vaghani claimed the saffron party would win both seats. The BJP would have to engineer 19 defections from the Congress if it has to win both seats. Amit Shah won the Gandhinagar LS seat by a record margin, while Smriti Irani defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi to win the Amethi seat in UP.
GPCC president Amit Chavda and leader of the opposition Paresh Dhanani left for Delhi on Monday, to apprise the party leadership about the reasons for the debacle in the Lok Sabha poll.
