Government Decides To Import 1 Lacs Tonnes Of Onion To Control Price Rise

The government has taken a big step to contain the rising prices of onions. The government has announced to import 1 lakh tonnes of onions. In some places including Delhi, the price of onion in the retail market has gone up to about Rs 100 per kg. The state-owned trade company MMTC will import onions. While the cooperative Nafed will supply it in the domestic market. In a tweet, Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said, the government has decided to import one lakh tonnes of onions to control prices.
He said that MMTC has been asked to import onions from 15th November to 15th December and make it available for distribution in the domestic market. The minister said that NAFED has been directed to supply imported onions across the country. Last week, the government said that it would import sufficient quantities of this vegetable from other countries, including the UAE, to increase the domestic supply of onions. According to MMTC, one tender floated in this regard will close on 14th November and another on 18th November.
According to the tender, the first consignment of 2,000 tonnes of onions should arrive at Indian ports immediately, while the second could be brought by December-end. Bidders will have to bid a minimum of 500 tonnes of onion. In case of inland container depots, the minimum bid quantity will be 250 tonnes. Exact supply orders in units of 250 tonnes will be regulated based on the requirement. Notably, MMTC did not get a good response to its first tender for importing 2,000 tonnes of onions.
