NITI Aayog clears proposal on artificial intelligence

For the formation of a task force under Principal Scientific Advisor K Vijay Raghavan to identify projects and initiatives to implement artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the government would soon launch a national AI programme. The mandate will include a national artificial intelligence centre. The centre would finally be able see light of the day as the finance ministry has cleared the NITI Aayog’s Rs 7,000-crore plan.

The E&IT ministry had said in January that such a centre would be set up by July but the then finmin Piyush Goyal announced in February that the centre would be developed as a hub, along with centres of excellence, for which nine priority areas had been identified.

For setting up AI framework, NITI Aayog had been demanding Rs 7,500 crore. Four panels were set up last year by the E&IT ministry that evaluated the use of AI for citizens like, such as setting up a data platform, skilling and reskilling, research and development, and examining the challenges involving legal, regulatory, ethical and cyber security aspects.
