Naxalite leader Kobad Ghandy was arrested by Surat Police in a nine-year-old sedition case. Kobad Ghandy, a member of the banned Maoist organization held in Hazaribagh jail in Jharkhand, was brought to Surat on a transfer warrant on Monday.
In 2010, Kamrej police of Surat district registered a case against Kobad Ghandy and 24 people for sedition and for allegedly promoting Naxalite activities in southern Gujarat. In this case, 23 people have been arrested before Kobad Ghandy while one of the accused Seema Hirani is still away from the police.
Deputy SP CM Jadeja said that 68-year-old Naxalite ideologue Kobad Ghandy was produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate HR Thakor. He handed over Kobad to Surat Rural Police, after which he was arrested. Police will seek remand of Kobad Ghandy from the court on Tuesday to clarify what role it played in promoting Naxalite activities in the district.
