The police action came after DGP Shivanand Jha held a meeting on June 18 with senior officials of anti-terrorism squad and district heads of special operations group (SOG) at the DGP office in Gandhingar and insisted on prompt action against illegal sale of drugs, liquor trafficking and gambling. Reportedly, Jha had reprimanded some of the officers. 198.543 kg ganja and brown sugar worth Rs 12,34,300 was seized from six districts of Gujarat.
The districts from where the ganja was seized include Navsari, Surat, Bharuch, Valsad, Porbandar and Amreli. “Nine persons were arrested while one consignment was found abandoned,” said a senior police official. The stuff is transported through luxury buses and cars to big cities and then sold to drug peddlers who sell it to students near colleges and school campuses, said an SOG official.
“Besides the meeting held at DGP office, he DGP also had a meeting through video conferencing with senior police officials to check illegal sale of synthetic drugs, contraband, liquor and gambling which is taking a heavy toll on the youths,” said a top police official.
