Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said that he opposes the idea of the leader of the country to hold office for an unlimited term like the system in the Soviet Union. Putin made this remark at a meeting of Second World War soldiers in St. Petersburg. A few days before this meeting, Putin advocated amending the constitution. This amendment may help him stay in power even after his current presidential term ends in 2024. When former soldiers proposed an unlimited term for the Russian president at the meeting, Putin said, “It would be very painful to return to the situation in the mid-980s when the country’s leaders remained in power until death.” Since Putin’s address to the nation on Wednesday, Russia’s political future has been clouded.
In this address, he had announced the right to nominate the Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet to the Parliament by changing the constitution. So far, the Prime Minister and the ministers are appointed by the President. In a shocking development, the government in Russia resigned on Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin announced several constitutional reforms. The President accepted Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s resignation. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that he is resigning in light of the change proposed by his leader in the government. Putin thanked Medvedev for his actions and appointed him as the Deputy Chief of the Presidential Security Council. Earlier, in his address to the nation, Putin hinted at amending the constitution, which would allow MPs to nominate the Prime Minister and members of the cabinet.
