Ex-RBI deputy governor Subir Gokarn passes away

Former RBI deputy governor and India’s representative on the IMF board, Subir Gokarn, passed away. He was 59.
Colleagues said he was suffering from cancer and breathed his last in a Maryland hospital in the US. He was an exstudent of St Xavier’s College, Mumbai. After obtaining a master’s degree from the Delhi School of Economics, Gokarn went on to obtain a doctorate in the same subject from Case Western Reserve University, US.
Gokarn was appointed as an ED in the IMF by the Modi government in 2015 and represented India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. Prior to moving to the US, Gokarn was associated with the Brookings Institution, based in Delhi. Before that, he was with the RBI as a deputy governor from 2009 to 2012. Earlier, he had spent several years with Crisil where he was chief economist.
