Gunmen shot dead a Personal Security Officer (PSO) of National Conference leader Syed Tauqeer Shah in this south Kashmir district.
The incident occurred when Shah was holding a meeting of NC workers at Hillad village, some 10 kms, away from main Kokernag town.
A police official said as the meeting was on in the house of NC worker, Muhammad Jabbar, the gunmen broke inside and fired indiscriminately at the policemen guarding Shah in the lawn.
He said, “In the incident a selection grade constable Reyaz Ahmad Khan alias Shaka of NewaPulwama suffered critical bullet injuries. He was rushed to sub-district hospital Kokernag. The doctors there referred him to district hospital Anantnag but he succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital.”
Medical Superintendent (MS) district hospital Anantnag, Dr. Majeed Mehrab said that Khan had sustained bullet injuries in chest and was declared bought dead on arrival.
Tauqeer, a former principal and district session judge, who had voluntarily retired from the services and joined NC early this year had conveyed party meeting at two other villages prior to the one at Hillad during the day. He is the party in charge of Breng-Kokernag assembly constituency.
Meanwhile, a police spokesman in a statement said, “to pay homage and respect to Riyaz Ahmad a wreath laying ceremony was held for the deceased at District Police Lines Anantnag. Senior police officers including DIG SKR, SSP Anantnag and other police officers laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the deceased for the supreme sacrifice made in the line of duty.”
He said that Riyaz Ahmad’s family is survived by parents, wife, 23 year-old son ArifRiyaz, 19 year-old son Sharik Khan and 17 year daughter BazilaRiyaz.
