Is this also some kind of stimulus to turn loss making trains into profit as railways plan to give passengers up to 25 per cent concession on trains with AC chair car and executive class seats to be implemented from September 2019.
Power to take any such decision is delegated to principal chief commercial managers of zonal railways. The discount will be offered on the base fare while reservation fee, superfast charge, GST will be applicable separate.
The scheme will be applicable on trains like in Shatabdi, Gatimaan, Tejas, Double Decker, Intercity trains among others. Trains with monthly occupancy of less than 50 per cent in the previous year are eligible for such discount.
Railways had planned this scheme to augment its revenue as well as occupancy as it faces stiff competition from roadways and low-cost air fares. All zonal railways have been asked by commercial directorate of the Railway Board to review occupancy of all trains with chair car and executive class seating accommodation to take suitable action.
