Heavy rainfall is likely to lash parts of Saurashtra and Kutch regions in Gujarat on 12th, 13th, and 14th June due to the deep depression that is forming in the Arabian sea. According to the forecast by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) – Gujarat, the Saurashtra-Kutch region of the state is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from 12th to 14th June, this week.
“The depression over southeast and adjoining Lakshadweep & east central Arabian sea moved northwards with a speed of about 31 kilometre per hour in last three hours, about 930 km south to southeast of Veraval (Gujarat). It is very likely to intensify further into a deep depression over the next six hours and will convert into a cyclonic storm over the next 24 hours and later, into a severe cyclonic storm thereafter. It is likely to move towards north to northwest direction during the next 72 hours,” said Jayanta Sarkar, director, IMD – Gujarat.
As a consequence of the cyclonic storm, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in the Saurashtra-Kutch region. On the contrary, the central and north Gujarat region will not receive any rainfall. Same is the case with the south Gujarat region, except for light to moderate rainfall that will be experienced in Valsad and Vapi on 12th June.
While there will be no rainfall in Ahmedabad, people here will finally have some relief from the blistering 44°C heat. “Ahmedabad may witness a drop in temperature by upto 3 degrees. There are chances the maximum temperature here may settle close to 40°C,” said Sarkar.
In the wake of the weather warning, the state government has called for an emergency meeting. The state relief commissioner, representatives of IMD along with the state revenue secretary are likely to attend this meeting, confirmed well-placed sources.
