Covid-19: Surge in cases; govt hospitals increase capacity in Gujarat

It was the third consecutive day for Gujarat’s most populous city to post 200-plus cases.
The surge was reflected in the bed availability in both government and private hospitals.

According to the website of Ahmedabad Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (AHNA) website, out of 2,256 non-requisited (not acquired by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and available for the patients paying for their treatment at normal cost) beds for Covid-19 patients, 2,043 or 91% were occupied and only 213 or 9% were available for new patients at 5 pm on Tuesday.

Out of the total, 88% of the 875 isolation beds, 92% of the 840 high-dependency patient beds, 92% of the 366 ICU beds without ventilators and 90% of the 175 ICU beds with ventilators were occupied. The data reflects bed availability at 70 city-based hospitals – over one third of which did not have any bed left.

At the Civil Hospital, a new ward is being prepared for the high-dependency patients, said senior officials. Dr JP Modi, medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, said that as on Tuesday evening, 625 out of 1200 beds were occupied whereas the share of critical patients was 28% at 174. At Sola Civil Hospital, out of 450 available beds, 279 or 62% of the beds were occupied. “All 50 beds with ventilator support are full,” said Dr Pina Soni, medical superintendent of Sola Civil Hospital.

“We are increasing the number of beds keeping in mind the inflow of patients.”
Gujarat had 4.96 lakh persons under quarantine due to their close contact to Covid-19 patients.
