2002 Sardarpura post-Godhra riots case : SC grants bail to 17 convicts

Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday granted conditional bail to 17 convicts in 2002 riots in Sardarpura after Godhra incident. He was convicted by the Gujarat High Court and sentenced to life imprisonment. All the convicts had filed appeals in the apex court. Was. In this incident, 33 people belonging to minority communities were burnt alive. The apex court in its order has asked them to go to Madhya Pradesh and do community service there.
The bench of Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde (SA Bobde), Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai (BR Gavai) and Justice Surya Kant divided the convicts into two groups and said that one group will move out of Gujarat and stay in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The bench said that the second group of convicts would have to go to Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. The Supreme Court (SC) said that under the terms of the bail, all the convicts will have to do six hours of community service each week. Apart from this, they have to appear in the local police station every week.
The court directed the District Legal Services Officers (DLSA) in Indore and Jabalpur to ensure that the convicts strictly follow the conditions of the bail. It also instructed DLSA to help find the right pathogen for the livelihood of the culprits. Also, the apex court has directed the Madhya Pradesh Legal Services Tribunal to file a report after three months in which it has to be told whether the culprits have complied with the conditions. Earlier, the Gujarat High Court convicted 14 acquitted and 17 in Sardarpur riots that followed Godhra incident.
