More 240 seats added in govt-run medical colleges in Gujarat for EWS quota

It has been declared by ministry of health and family welfare, government of India that 240 more seats are added in government-run medical colleges in Gujarat for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation quota. While the development may give some respite to the state which was earlier given only 100 additional seats, it still misses the state government’s aim of adding 1,150 seats by a huge margin. The total number of seats under the EWS category for undergraduate medical courses in Gujarat is now 340, according to a state government statement. After the addition, the total number of seats in government medical colleges has gone up from 4,800 seats to 5,140 seats, according to the statement.
The Gujarat government had last month approved a 25% seat increase in medical, engineering and other professional courses. The decision was taken to implement the 10% EWS reservation quota cleared by the Centre earlier this year and to ensure that it does not eat into existing SC, ST and OBC quotas. All state-run colleges in the state, where the total number of seats are 150 will now have 170 seats after the addition, an increase of 20 seats for each college.
