Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati did not attend the swearing in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday even though she was in Delhi.
Sources in the party indicated that the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister usually does not attend such events, though she made an exception in the case of the swearing in of HD Kumaraswamy when he took oath as chief minister of Karnataka.
“She attended his swearing-in in Bengaluru as BSP had a pre-poll alliance with Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress. The lone BSP MP, N Mahesh, was made a minister in the cabinet,” said a senior party member.
However, in this case, even as political parties wedded to the idea of a mahagatbandhan if BJP had lost the election attended the ceremony in Delhi, Mayawati chose to stay away, like West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
